There's no doubt that the 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 and 2014 Chevrolet Silverado dominated automotive news headlines as truck-lovers and auto enthusiasts around the country patiently awaited the release of the redesigned luxury pickup truck.

The 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 platform incorporates numerous changes over the outgoing 2nd generation platform with an emphasis on fuel economy, towing capacity and ride quality.

The all-new GMC Sierra 1500 has three gasoline engine options all dubbed EcoTec3, including a new, 4.3l V6 capable of a very respectable 285hp and 305lb/ft of torque.  From there, the 5.3l has been bumped to 355hp, and the larger-than-life 6.2l touting a class leading power rated at an estimated 420 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque, the most power and torque of any light duty truck engine.

Thanks to three key features in all three engines, the fuel economy is that of past-era V6 engines.  VVT (Variable Valve Timing) allows the engine to advance and retard valve timing on the fly, and obtain more horespower and torque across the powerband while increasing fuel economy.  Direct injection technology works by providing a direct shot of gasoline into the cylinder at a precise pressure and volume to achieve the most optimal fuel burn, resulting in increased fuel economy.  Active Fuel Management (AFM) is a feature that has been tweaked from the previous generation of engines allowing for cylinder deactivation at times when full power is not needed, such as driving down the highway on level or slightly inclined terrain.

The 2014 Sierra is capable of a maximum conventional towing capacity of  11,400 lbs when equipped with the 5.3 engine and 2wd drive train.
