How Proper Maintenance Helps Resale Value

The day you bring home your new car is well-worth celebrating. The day you trade it in for a new vehicle can be just as exciting, especially if you have maintained your vehicle well over the years. Here’s why proper maintenance is so important, both during ownership and when trading in.
Cost vs. Benefit. There are two primary reasons individuals don't get proper maintenance on their vehicles: time and money. Those who don't have enough time to keep their vehicle maintained will definitely not have enough time to get it repaired down the road. Those who are worried about the cost of maintaining a vehicle need to examine two things: the cost of getting a vehicle repaired due to a lack of maintenance, and the increase in resale value as a result of proper maintenance.
Documentation. So you followed your maintenance log that came with your vehicle, right? Great! You also documented each and every oil change, tune up, tire rotation, windshield wiper switch, and whatever else you could think of documenting, correct? Having this information on hand makes your vehicle much more attractive to buyers. If you tell a prospective buyer that you've meticulously maintained your vehicle, he or she will be more likely to believe you if it's properly documented in a log book, especially when accompanied by receipts.
Recommended maintenance and what to record. If you haven't kept a log, gather your receipts. If you don't have receipts, go through credit card statements. Make sure your records are accurate. Here are some of the things you should document:
  • Fluid changes
  • Tire rotation
  • Paint or body shop receipts
  • Engine repair paperwork
  • Car detailing receipts
  • Inspection reports
  • Smog certificates
Other recommended maintenance. Obviously, nobody wants to buy a car that doesn't run well, but in your haste to document and maintain mechanical aspects of the vehicle, don't neglect to maintain the exterior and interior. Unsightly blemishes on the exterior or a torn, ripped, or dirty interior can distract from your well-organized documentation as well.

Pre-sale preparation. In addition to routine cleaning of the car's exterior and interior, there are a few things you're going to want to pay special attention to when preparing a car for resale. Clean the windshields inside and out. Use a high-quality product to return the luster to vinyl surfaces and components on the inside. Vacuum the upholstery and carpets. Wipe down surfaces. If you've been doing this all along, you'll have no problems when it comes to preparing the vehicle. Keep the exterior free of debris and give it a good detailing when preparing it for sale.
There are more factors than routine maintenance when it comes to maintaining a car's value. Take note, however, that an unmaintained vehicle will fetch less money, regardless of its make or model.

Ask a Technician: Should I warm my car up before driving in winter weather?

The daily morning car-warming ritual is carried out faithfully in most parts of the country from late November to early March. But is it necessary?

Here's what the technicians at Williams Buick GMC have to say:
The purpose of warming up your car. The main reason drivers start their car and let it idle is to warm it up by getting the oil circulating through the engine. Modern fuel injection systems, however, with the elimination of carburetors and chokes, have made engine idling unnec
essary. After about 30 seconds, the oil is circulating and your car is ready to go. The Hinkle Charitable Foundation's Anti-Idling Primer, in fact, asserts that idling forces the engine to operate in an extremely inefficient mode, which can harm the engine's performance and lower its mileage. If you're still skeptical, instead of idling, drive a little slower for the first mile or two.
Warming up the inside. Many commuters couldn't care less about engine efficiency at 6:00 a.m. in the morning when it's frigid cold. Instead, they just want a semi-warm vehicle to step into when it's cold. However, idling your car can be an expensive and ineffective way to warm up a vehicle. A more effective way to warm up your car is to actually drive it. If you really want to be on the cutting edge, electric cars allow you to pre-warm the vehicle via remote access without ever having to idle.

Idling and the environment. Still not convinced about the inefficiency of idling to warm up the vehicle? Perhaps you think engine inefficiency is a small price to pay for not freezing your fingertips when you enter your car. Maybe, a look at environmental effects will unfreeze your stance. Exhaust is harmful to human health, especially children. Certainly, exhaust is a necessary component of driving a car, but unnecessarily spewing exhaust adds to air pollution. Because idling often takes place close to curbs and sidewalks, pedestrians and children are especially at risk to the negative effects of exhaust.

The cost of idling. If air pollution and the potential harmful effects of unnecessary exhaust don't convince you to cut down on idling, perhaps the cost of gasoline will. Idling wastes gas. Gas costs money, therefore idling wastes money -- your money. Motorists are advised to turn off their engine when idling more than 10 seconds (traffic stops, excluded). You'll save money. You'll save the environment. You'll save your engine. A new engine, by the way, costs money too. A lot of money.

Proper car warming procedures. Don't stand by idly and let this information go to waste. If you're worried about your engine's performance, warm the car by driving it slowly. If you're worried about being cold when you hop in the car, bundle up, start the car, adjust the radio, turn on the heat and get going.

2014 Buick Regal Boasts More Power, Greater Efficiency

DETROIT – The revamped 2014 Buick Regal now arriving in dealerships features the sport sedan’s most powerful standard engine ever – and increased fuel efficiency.
Producing an SAE-rated 259 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque from just two liters of displacement, the Regal has more standard horsepower and torque than the Acura TSX, Audi A4, Lexus IS 250, Mercedes-Benz CLA 250, Volkswagen CC, and Volvo S60. The new turbo four-cylinder engine incorporates an improved twin-scroll turbocharger and a host of other advancements that result in a smoother, quieter engine with improved power and efficiency.
When compared with the 2013 Regal Turbo, the new 2.0L Turbo produces 18 percent more horsepower and 13 percent more torque while delivering more miles per gallon. Equipped with its six-speed automatic transmission, the 2014 Regal gets an EPA-estimated 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway, an increase of 3 mpg or 17 percent city economy over the 2013 Regal Turbo.
2014 Buick Regal in Ashen Gray exterior color and equipped with 18” wheels, sunroof and driver confidence page l and ll.

“Power and fuel efficiency are typically mutually exclusive,” said Mike Katerberg, chief powertrain engineer. “But with our new 2.0L Turbo, we were able to increase both and create one of the most torque rich and fuel efficient combinations on the market.”
Ward’s 10 Best Engine, debuting in the Cadillac ATS, the new 2.0L Turbo is comprised of about 95 percent new parts compared to the outgoing engine. Both powertrains use a cast aluminum cylinder block and direct fuel injection, but enhanced driving refinement was the goal of the second-generation 2.0L Turbo.
New design elements and components work harmoniously to enrich performance, efficiency, acoustics and durability. Changes to the new 2.0L Turbo include:
  • Relocated balance shafts inside of the oil pan help reduce noise
  • A two-stage, variable displacement oil pump now located inside the oil pan contributes to greater fuel efficiency and reduced noise
  • A new two-piece oil pan is constructed of aluminum in the upper section to promote structural rigidity and stamped steel in the lower for its acoustic dampening
  • A new cylinder head design that relocates the intake system/throttle body to the firewall side of the engine compartment and positions the exhaust ports on the forward-facing section of the engine
  • Proprietary computational fluid dynamics analysis techniques were used to develop an all-new combustion system with a higher compression ratio, which also helped boost efficiency
  • Dual continuously variable cam phasing with increased authority to maximize low-speed torque and fuel efficiency
  • An acoustic intake manifold cover with integrated sound-absorbing blanket for improved noise isolation
  • Structural front engine and camshaft covers are stiffer and more rigid, contributing to lower engine noise
  • Premium features including a forged steel crankshaft and an inverted-tooth camshaft drive chain that enhance durability and reduce noise
“We really strived to not only give the customer great performance, but also a smoother, quieter, and more refined engine, all essential elements in a Buick,” said Katerberg.
In addition to the new standard turbocharged engine, the 2014 Regal turbo models now offer an available advanced all-wheel-drive system with electronic limited-slip differential and HiPer Strut front suspension for added performance and drivability in all types of road conditions.
The new Regal sport sedan also features refreshed exterior and interior styling. It now comes standard with next-generation IntelliLink connectivity including eight-inch color touch display, leather-appointed seating surfaces with heated front seats, rear vision camera, and 18-inch alloy wheels. A suite of active safety technologies including full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Alert, Side Blind Zone Alert, Lane Change Alert, Lane Departure Warning, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert is available.

2015 GMC Yukon - Capable and Comfortable

GMC announced today the all-new 2015 Yukon, Yukon XL and flagship Yukon Denali models will deliver greater capability and refinement, with more power, new fold-flat rear seats and a quieter interior. And thanks to a new family of advanced EcoTec3 engines, the lineup is expected to deliver the segment’s best V-8 fuel economy.

2015 GMC Yukon Denali (Left), 2015 GMC Yukon XL (Right)

(Source: GM News) Bold styling and advanced technologies – including new safety and security technologies – support Yukon’s greater capability, while a more comprehensive list of standard features and enhanced infotainment options are designed to broaden the appeal of one of the industry’s most-popular full-size SUV lineups. Combined Yukon/Yukon XL and Denali sales were up 24 percent for the eight months of 2013.
“We’ve engineered the Yukon and Yukon XL from the ground up, building on a strong legacy of capability to take them to the top of the segment with exceptional refinement and purposeful technology,” said Tony DiSalle, vice president of GMC Marketing. “And when it comes to the tasks people rely on a full-size SUV for, they do it better than ever – and with more style.”
Yukon and Yukon XL share design, architectural and powertrain elements, but Yukon XL has an approximately 14-inch longer wheelbase and is approximately 20 inches longer overall, providing greater legroom for third-row passengers and almost twice the cargo room behind the third-row seat.
“Although they are based on a similar architecture, Yukon and Yukon XL are distinctive products that appeal to different customers,” said DiSalle. “Versatility and spaciousness are valued by customers for both vehicles, but the Yukon XL is the choice for families with more children and those with lifestyles that require its unique combination of passenger- and cargo-hauling capabilities. In fact, Yukon XL owners are more than twice as likely to transport passengers daily in the third-row seat.”
New and enhanced product highlights of the 2015 Yukon lineup include:
  • Fold-flat second- and third-row seats that enhance cargo capability and convenience – including an available power-folding feature
  • Approximately two inches more legroom for second-row passengers and easier entry/exit
  • All-new cargo management system
  • Available power rear liftgate with multiple programmable height settings
  • Standard eight-inch-diagonal color touch screen radio with enhanced IntelliLink and available navigation
  • Eight-inch-diagonal customizable driver display with three available user themes and available head-up display (Denali models)
  • Multiple USB ports, SD slots and accessory power outlets – including a 110-volt three-prong outlet –  to support electronic devices of all kinds
  • Available Blu-ray/DVD rear-seat entertainment system with dual screens on Yukon XL
  • Conversation mirror in the overhead console that provides a panoramic view of the rear seats
  • Keyless entry and push-button start.
When it comes to safety, the Yukon lineup incorporates new technologies to help protect the driver and passengers before, during and after a collision. They include a forward radar system and the segment’s only front seat center-mounted air bag (models with bucket seats), which is engineered to provide additional protection to drivers and front passengers in far-side impact crashes, where the affected occupant is on the opposite, non-struck side of the vehicle.
Standard and available safety features, depending on the model, also include forward collision alert, front park assist, lane departure warning, lane change assist, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, front and rear automatic braking, and GM’s Safety Alert Seat. It offers directional vibrations to alert the driver about potential crash threats.
2015 GMC Yukon Denali Interior View

Bold styling, enhanced refinement
All-new exterior and interior designs advance GMC’s professional grade aesthetic with elements designed to be beautiful and functional. The exteriors are sleeker and more aerodynamic, enhancing efficiency on the highway and contributing to the new Yukon’s quiet ride.
Bold styling cues include highly detailed, chrome-accented grilles matched with GMC’s signature C-shaped light-emitting diode lighting motif, front and rear. Projector-beam headlamps are standard on Yukon and Yukon XL. The distinctive Denali models are instantly identifiable by their signature chrome grille and unique exterior appointments, including exclusive high-intensity discharge headlamps.
Additional exterior features include:
  • New inlaid doors fit into the body side openings instead of over the top of the body, significantly reducing wind noise and contributing to improved aerodynamics
  • Laminated windshield and front door glass to enhance quietness
  • Lightweight aluminum hood and liftgate panels enhance efficiency through reduced overall mass
  • A standard rear spoiler on the liftgate houses a relocated rear window wiper that is hidden when not in use
  • New worm screw-style liftgate arms take up less interior space than the previous gooseneck arms
  • Illuminated, power-retractable assist steps available on Denali
  • New family of 18-, 20- and 22-inch wheels, including standard 20-inch wheels on Denali.
Inside, the all-new 2015 Yukon’s precisely crafted interior features a quiet cabin, authentic materials and premium infotainment choices. Examples include soft-touch instrument panel, console and door panel materials with live stitching and purposeful use of ambient lighting in functional areas, including first- and second-row foot wells and the center console. All models have a standard Bose sound system, seats with dual-firmness foam and an ambient air vent designed to enhance comfort for front-seat passengers.
2015 GMC Yukon Denali Rear View

Denali models feature active noise cancellation technology to make the interior quieter.
There are more storage options in the new Yukon lineup, including a compartmentalized center console that’s large enough to store a laptop or iPad and has provisions for hanging file folders and other organizational features, especially for customers whose vehicle also serves as a rolling office.
More capable, more comfortable
The 2015 Yukon lineup delivers greater capability and greater refinement through new and enhanced chassis and suspension systems. A fully boxed frame – composed of more than 75 percent high-strength steel – supports a quiet and controlled ride. New shear-style body mounts attached to the frame significantly improve stiffness and contribute to the Yukon’s smooth ride.
Compared with previous models, the driving experience of the new SUVs is further enhanced with:
  • Wider rear track that contributes to a more planted stance
  • Wheels that are a half-inch wider, reducing tire flex for improved cornering performance
  • New, electric variable-assist power steering system enhances fuel economy and tailors steering assist to vehicle speed
  • New 9.5-inch rear axle and standard automatic locking rear differential
  • Standard StabiliTrak electronic stability control, tow/haul mode, trailer sway control, auto grade braking and hill start assist
  • New four-wheel-disc brake system with Duralife™ brake rotors that offer up to double the service life, along with brake pedal revisions that improve pedal feel for stronger-feeling, more confident braking performance
  • Denali models include third-generation magnetic ride control, a real-time damping system that delivers more precise body motion control by “reading” the road every millisecond and changing damping in just five milliseconds.
Advanced engine technology
The all-new Yukon family is more powerful and efficient than before, thanks to the new EcoTec3 engine family, which debuted earlier this year in the all-new 2014 Sierra. A 5.3L V-8 is standard in Yukon and Yukon XL models and an exclusive 6.2L engine is standard in Denali models, which is expected to deliver the segment’s best horsepower and torque.
The EcoTec3 engines feature state-of-the-art technologies, including direct injection, cylinder deactivation, continuously variable valve timing and an advanced combustion system, designed to make the most of power, torque and efficiency across a broad range of operating conditions. More precisely controlled combustion enables the new engines to run with a higher compression ratio, which delivers greater power and efficiency.
EcoTec 3 5.3l V8 Engine Powering the 2015 GMC Yukon

Hydraulic engine mounts, electronic throttle control, adaptive exhaust systems, improved aerodynamics and other technologies help the engines operate in four-cylinder mode for longer periods of time with Active Fuel Management, further increasing efficiency.
Both engines are matched with the Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic transmission.
The new Yukon family will be built at GM’s Arlington, Texas assembly plant, and scheduled to begin arriving at GMC dealerships in the first quarter of 2014.

Bringing General Motors History to Life at the GM Heritage Center

General Motors Heritage Center
Every August, millions of people gather in the Detroit area on Woodward Avenue — America’s first highway — for the weekend-long celebration of the heydays of the 1950s and 60s known as the Woodward Dream Cruise. The 25-mile stretch of highway between Detroit and Pontiac, MI is full of vintage automobiles that are almost as fun to look at and talk about as they are to drive. Although the weather can be hot and humid, the atmosphere along Woodward is always lively. Ask any one of the automobile drivers parked in the lots along the highway and they will happily tell you a lengthy story of the history of their automobile.
General Motors Heritage Center Corvettes
For some, the Dream Cruise is the one weekend each year they set aside to celebrate the history of their vehicle. General Motors, however, understands the importance of celebrating automotive history every day. The GM Heritage Center in southeast Michigan is a facility set aside by the company to collect and showcase artifacts from our long history. Although celebrating our accomplishments in automotive design, performance and innovation may seem like the facility’s only function, it is much more than that. As the founder and curator of the GM Heritage Center collection, I know that the Center is also a valuable resource for company executives, designers, marketers, and engineers today. It is not simply a space for the company to celebrate the successes we have had in the past, but also a place where tomorrow’s history is inspired today.
GM Heritage Center
The Heritage Center is a 15,000 square foot facility in Southeast Michigan that showcases the history of all of the General Motors brands, but it didn’t begin that way. It started in 1986 as an initiative to save Cadillac vehicles housed in a closing plant from the trash. As time passed and the collection grew, the Heritage Center needed space to accommodate the changes. It moved twice more before settling in its current location in 2005, when the facility began showcasing pieces from all GM brands.
1956 GMC Pickup
Approximately 600 vehicles and thousands of documents make up the GM North American Heritage Collection. To collect them was no easy task. And the collection keeps growing! New pieces of GM history from automotive enthusiasts, dealerships, and individual history-hunters arrive on my desk with surprising frequency.
1953 Chevrolet Corvette
1953 Chevrolet Corvette
Although we have about 600 cars and trucks in the Center at one time, throughout the year over 1,500 vehicles make their way into our showroom. This means the layout of vehicles on display is constantly changing. Our displays generally feature vehicles from GM’s past that echo current trends in the automotive industry. For instance, alternative energy vehicles are a hot, innovative topic in the automotive world today, but GM has been exploring the possibility of harnessing these powers in our vehicles for more than 40 years! On display now are a number of vehicles that are powered by substances other than gasoline.
Recycling and building upon old ideas to create innovative, new products is a practice that has always happened in the automotive industry. Whether it’s the unique, vertical tail lights on the1966 Cadillac Calais inspiring the design of the dramatic tail end of the Cadillac ELR, or the electric and battery-powered Electrovair II paving the way for extended long-range vehicles like the Chevrolet Volt and Spark EV, I firmly believe that our old cars help build and sell our old cars. We host company meetings, executive training sessions, and engineering deep-dives in the facility to ignite a creative and innovative spark in our employees. Though we are not open to the public, we lead educational tours and host charity events by appointment. In total, almost 20,000 people were inspired by the GM Heritage Center in 2012.
Formal Attire at the GM Heritage Center
The GM Heritage Center will be celebrating with the rest of the automotive community during the Woodward Dream Cruise, but the celebration won’t stop when the vehicles leave the parking lots along Woodward Avenue. The GM Heritage Center will continue to collect history from yesterday to inspire tomorrow’s innovations and achievements in automotive design, engineering, and leadership.
