How Buick eAssist Works

The eAssist system combines a compact electric motor and state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery to a 2.4L four-cylinder ECOTEC engine and a six-speed automatic transmission.  The electric energy stored in the battery is used to provide an electric boost during certain driving conditions (mainly acceleration), and runs all of the car's heating, cooling and interior technology when stopped at a stop sign or traffic light.  The battery and motor-generator unit can also provide up to a 15 hp boost during heavy acceleration.  Charging requires no plugging in or additional hassles that some hybrid vehicles depend on.  Regenerative breaking captures energy to charge the battery that would otherwise be lost.

The automatic start/stop technology shifts from gas to electric power and back seamlessly-conserving fuel.  When you step off the brake, the engine restarts instantly-lag free.  The lithium-ion battery pack, stored in the truck uses the energy created via regenerative breaking to power the radio, climate control and other accessories whenever the engine operates in auto-stop mode.

The innovative eAssist system from Buick returns an EPA-Estimated 25 mpg in the city, and 36 mpg highway.
