GM is currently testing what will be the next generation of heavy duty pickups. From the spy photos (from pickuptrucks.com), we can see that the only portion of the truck still heavily covered is the front grille
The
body appears to share the styling of the recently released, 2014 GMC Sierra 1500, except for the fact that the HD models are noticeably
larger in
the photos. But the more information — such as payload, GCWR, and
tow ratings, are all a mystery at this point.
The GM HD pickups are likely to be available as 2015 models by the
summer of 2014. Hopefully more information is in the pipeline for release soon.

At the Center for Automotive Research Management Briefing Seminars
today, General Motors Executive Vice President and Chief Financial
Officer Dan Ammann provided the first look at the next-generation
Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, designed to be capable, versatile and
fuel-efficient alternatives to full-size pickups.
Colorado and Canyon will join the all-new 2014 Silverado and Sierra
1500s, and the upcoming Silverado and Sierra HDs, to give Chevrolet and
GMC the industry’s most comprehensive lineups of pickups, helping
customers choose the right truck for their needs.
Production is scheduled to start in 2014 at GM’s Wentzville, Mo., assembly center.
Spied photos of the 2015 GMC Canyon Compact Pickup Truck
Initial reactions of GM's decision to pull Colorado and Canyon off the market for a year long redesign point out that the American automobile giant is readying up to fight for a spot in the compact pickup truck market. A market currently dominated by Toyota's Tacoma and the Nissan Frontier.
Many currently are hoping for a viable American alternative to the dominating Toyota Tacoma, now the wait is on to see if GM can deliver.

DETROIT -- About 20 Buick Encores are en route to Chris Haydocy's dealership in Columbus, Ohio. That's more than he has gotten in months.
Buick Encore's Innovative All-Wheel Drive system
Haydocy is among many Buick dealers who say that, after a hot launch that began in January, the rollout of the small crossover stalled after shipments from General Motors slowed to a trickle.
"It was absolutely red hot when it first came out," says Haydocy, dealer principal at Haydocy Buick-GMC. "Then there was this lag that kind of took the wind out of the sails. We're finally getting adequate supply for the first time in three or four months."
GM acknowledges that it underestimated initial U.S. demand for the Korea-built crossover when it was launched and says it recently boosted production. The Encore also has been competing for space on the assembly line with the Opel Mokka, its platform sibling, which has generated booming demand in Europe.
And in May, some U.S. shipments were held at a port in New Jersey for several weeks "pending a retrofit," some dealers were told in a memo at the time, exacerbating the tight supplies.
Buick spokesman Nick Richards declined to detail the retrofit but called it "inconsequential" to the vehicle's availability. He blamed any supply shortages on underestimated demand, saying that sales were "triple or quadruple" GM's projected pace in the first few months.
"We increased production, so there have been a lot more landing within the last month," he said. "Most of the dealers who didn't have as many or didn't have the right mix should be on their way to getting plenty."
Buick dealers are eager to capitalize on the Encore, which is a pioneer in the nascent market for small premium crossovers but is about to get plenty of company. Audi, Lexus, Lincoln and Cadillac all are likely to throw their own small premium crossovers into the fray over the next two years.
David Ferraez, dealer principal at Green Brook Buick-GMC in New Jersey and a member of the Buick-GMC National Dealer Council, sees a "huge upside in this segment." He said the Encore appeals to both luxury and mainstream buyers -- he has taken trade-ins on everything from an Acura RDX to a Hyundai Santa Fe.
"We think the demand far exceeds the supply right now," said Ferraez, adding that Encores have been arriving "not nearly as fast as any of the dealers hoped."
Still, GM deems the launch a success. Richards notes that Encore sales of 12,252 units over its first six months exceeded those of the Buick Veranocompact sedan over its first six months on the market.
Encore sales are well on pace to eclipse analysts' volume forecasts for 2013. U.S. sales through July totaled 15,428 units. Before the launch, AutoPacific Inc. predicted 13,600 units this year; IHS Automotive foresaw 18,500.
Richards says Buick's U.S. dealers "will be able to get what we need for the market."
"We're kind of creating this segment," he says. "We're learning as we go."

Buick wasn't always synonymous with retirement and long
naps.
During the dark days of the mid-1980s, Buick was GM's sunny spot for
quick cars, racing prowess, and advanced technology such as in-car cell phones
and touch screens. To turn fundamentally bad V-6s into viable V-8 alternatives,
Buick engineers developed sequential electronic fuel injection,
distributor-less ignition, and ceramic-impeller-wheel turbos.
Feeling its oats in 1984, Buick created "We Brake for
Corvettes" bumper stickers celebrating an epic intramural victory: Buick's
Regal Grand National could outgun Chevy's two-seater in the quarter-mile. In
1985, Indy cars powered by turbocharged Buick V-6s qualified 1-2 at the
Brickyard. To seal the deal, Buick built a run of 1987-model turbocharged and
intercooled GNXs; in our May 1987 issue, one proved capable of a 4.7-second
0-to-60-mph sprint and ran the quarter-mile in 13.5 seconds at 102 mph. (C/D's
test results for a 1988 Corvette: zero to 60 in 5.6 seconds, the quarter-mile
in 14.3 seconds at 95 mph.)
To put an end to the long, dull interlude that followed that
era, Buick is resuscitating its two revered nameplates. The 2015 Grand National
and GNX sedans will ride on GM's new rear-drive Alpha platform, which was
introduced with the Cadillac ATS and is earmarked for the sixth-generation
Camaro and the third-generation Cadillac CTS.
Like the ATS, Buick's GN will offer the choice of a
turbocharged 2.0-liter four (currently rated at 272 horsepower) or a 3.6-liter
V-6 that makes 321 horses in the ATS. The wicked GNX, available only in the
official shade of evil (black), will be powered by a twin-turbo 3.6-liter V-6
that should be good for 400 horsepower. The transmission roster will include
manuals for the turbo engines and automatics across the board. The eight-speed
Hydra-Matic due in 2014 should serve nicely here.
Even without the V-8 engines that are reserved for Camaros
and Cadillacs, these Buick sports sedans should be capable of serious
performance. By that we mean tire smoke on demand, near-neutral throttle-down
handling, and acceleration figures that raise eyebrows in Bavaria. In the
likely event Buick throws all-wheel drive into the mix, its new warriors will
take the fight to Audi.
Family dynasties in the GM org chart reveal why Buick's hot
rods easily won approval: Lloyd Reuss was Buick's general manager in the early
1980s when the Grand National and GNX seeds were planted. His son, Mark Reuss,
a teenager back when Buicks ruled, is now the current president of GM North
America. That infusion of fresh Reuss blood is bound to revive the brand's
performance arm.
Summer is officially here, and many families are taking
advantage of the warm weather for a vacation. In fact, a recent study from
TripAdvisor stated that three in four summer travelers said they would be
taking a trip by car, up from 70% last summer.
Whether it’s a trip down the road to the local ice cream
shop, or a cross country road trip, remember to take extra care this summer and
make sure kids are safe and comfortable in the car.
The General Motors Foundation and Safe Kids Worldwide are
partnering to spread awareness of the dangers of heat stroke. According to Safe Kids Worldwide, a global
organization with a mission of preventing unintentional childhood injury,
roughly 38 children in the United States die each year from being trapped in a
hot car. Since children’s bodies heat up three to five times faster than
adults, they are at greater risk for hyperthermia—also known as heat stroke.
“In May of 2013, we recorded seven deaths from heat stroke
in vehicles,” said Kate Carr of Safe Kids in a recent podcast. “And that’s
heartbreaking; it’s a tragedy and something that we can avoid.” This year,
there have already been 15 heatstroke related deaths reported in the United
States.
Cars can heat up to dangerous levels in as little as a few
minutes, and it doesn’t take a temperature of 90 degrees for this to happen—a
car can reach well above 110 degrees on a nice cool day of 60 or 70 degrees.
In order to prevent heatstroke deaths, Safe Kids has
developed some key tips that can be easily remembered using the acronym A.C.T.
A: Avoid heatstroke related injury and death by never
leaving a child alone in a car—not even for a minute. Make sure the car is
locked and the keys are out of reach to children, and teach children that a
vehicle is not a play area.
C: Create reminders by putting an important item in the back
seat of the car— such as a purse, briefcase or cell phone.
T: Take action. Call 9-11 if a child is left alone in a car.
“We want to make sure everyone has a safe and enjoyable
summer,” said James Bell, head of consumer affairs for General Motors. “By
spreading the word and making a personal commitment to never leave your child
alone in the car, we can prevent these tragedies from happening.”
Safe Kids and the General Motors Foundation are also
partnering with 600 coalitions across the United States—including police and
fire departments, healthcare workers, and hospitals to spread the word and help
educate families on the dangers of leaving a child alone in the car.
Summer vacation should be fun and relaxing! With the right
planning and attention to safety, this summer will be sure to provide
unforgettable memories for the whole family.

General Motors’ Rayong engine plant in Thailand and Cheongna proving ground in Korea are now landfill-free, bringing the company’s total to 33 sites throughout Asia that recycle, reuse or convert to energy all of their daily waste. GM’s landfill-free facility count in Asia compares to 45 in North America and 22 in Europe.
“Regardless of where our teams are building cars for our customers around the world, we all share a commitment to the environment,” said Tim Lee, GM vice president Global Manufacturing and president of International Operations. “We work with all of our plants to ensure they have a roadmap to get to landfill-free, which is important considering our commitment of 125 landfill-free facilities by 2020.”
A benefit of GM’s consistent and structured landfill-free process is the ability for facilities around the world to discuss challenges and get ideas to help cut waste. These efforts help the company balance its landfill-free progress around the globe.
For example, 70 percent of waste at GM manufacturing plants in Asia is packaging materials such as wood and cardboard. GM’s plant in Rayong, Thailand, as well as its plant in Talegaon, India, swapped wood pallets for reusable, recycled-content plastic containers that weigh and cost less. The two facilities reduced wood pallet waste by a combined 146 tons last year, success that now has GM’s North American operations researching the use of these plastic containers in their operations.
“Wood pallets oftentimes aren't built to be reused after one overseas shipment,” said John Bradburn, GM manager of waste-reduction efforts. “Our most common recycling method is to grind them for mulch, and our South Africa plant is even taking them apart to make furniture. But our teams in Asia employed a more sustainable solution. By using plastic, they cut weight by more than half and we can continue using them after the initial load.”
Waste collection and separation systems also lead to improvements. For example, employees at GM’s Changwon operations in Korea adopted new recycling containers and signage that helped eliminate 35 tons of mixed waste.
Waste-reduction best practices range from high-tech processes to minimize sludge from wastewater treatment, painting or grinding, to locally sourcing and sanitizing gloves for reuse. The latter reduced waste at the Talegaon plant 10 tons in one year alone.
The Cheongna proving ground in Incheon, Korea is recycling materials required for vehicle development and research, including batteries, plastic, chassis components, packaging and chemicals.
GM’s landfill-free manufacturing footprint spans assembly, powertrain, casting and stamping plants, and includes non-manufacturing facilities such as office buildings, warehouses and distribution centers. About half of GM’s operations in Asia are landfill-free, including 17 in Korea, 10 in China, four in Thailand and two in India. GM’s worldwide total is 106.
GM recycles and reuses more waste from its manufacturing facilities than any other automaker, and no other automaker has as many sites contributing zero waste to landfill. The company published a downloadable blueprint, "The Business Case for Zero Waste," intended to help businesses of all sizes and industries reduce waste and create efficiencies.
